Learning to Heal Ourselves

I am in awe of the wisdom and knowledge every guest brings to our class. Each time, I am almost mesmerized by the speaker and in need of a few tissues. Albert Marshall was no different. His talk was honest, open and thought provoking. He spoke of our modern day health care system. How our system looks only at the host and not the symptoms. Each person needs a holistic approach to whatever medical problems they may be having.

He talked about how we have no relationship with our medicines. You go to the Doctor, she or he figures out what your dilemma is, and, writes you a script for pills. Do you know what ingredients are in the pills? Is the medication a band aid to cover the results of what the real problem is? You of course take the medication, we all do. No questions.

There was no finger pointing or blame here, just a frank discussion about people and how we look after each other. A discussion about the whole person. The mind, body and spirit. Each part as important for well being as the next. Each part needing to be maintained in a balanced way.

Albert spoke of the effects when all three are not in harmony. Maybe your health issue is about weight. Imbalance can make responding to medicines more difficult and that sometimes it takes others’ perspectives to transform a person to be well. I was not sure I knew what he meant and then Albert said” words are used as medicine” (this was about “tissue” time)

The mind: The words we use to speak to each other can be healing. Sometimes, all it takes is something simple like asking a question.”Would you like to talk?” Allowing others to speak in open conversation can in itself be very healing. Most often, health issues like addiction, is the result of underlying emotional stress. We all want someone to care for us, to care about us, to ease our minds, to open up to.

The spirit: “How can I enhance myself to be a healer? Albert talked about the “placebo” effect.”We believe what we are told to believe. Diabetes, overweight, gambling, addiction, there is a huge epidemic. The spirit needs to be nurtured; convince you of yourself. Take time to be alone, to contemplate, to renew your spirit. Believe you can get well, believe in yourself. Surround yourself with those who support you.”Words are medicine.”
